What is a
Digital Carnet?
From April 2026, the UK, EU, Switzerland and Norway will officially go live with Digital (eATA) Carnets, modernising global trade documentation by replacing paper-based Carnets with a fully digital version.
This will simplify the Carnet process for holders and Customs, reducing manual handling and preventing document loss or errors - creating a faster, greener and more secure system.
Production companies can now trial the new digital system, which will help to ensure a smooth transition ahead of the rollout.
How it
Works
- Apply online via your Chamber of Commerce issuing portal (e.g. eCert)
- Download your Digital Carnet to your smartphone or tablet through the eATA app
- When travelling, present a QR code at Customs instead of a paper document
- Customs scan and verify the details electronically
- All transactions are recorded and visible to the Carnet holder, Customs authorities and the issuing Chamber
Other countries will transition to digital at different times, so both paper and digital Carnets are expected to be used – depending on destination – until 2028.
Importantly, companies do not need to worry about selecting the right format. The Chamber’s issuing system will automatically determine which countries accept which type and will issue the correct Carnet(s) for your trip.
