Visas & Permits
Visas & Work Permits
Slovenia is a member of the Schengen area.
UK passport holders can enter Slovenia visa-free for stays of up to 90 days, over a 180 day period, for some business-related activities (such as attending business meetings). However, for longer stays or other types of work, a visa or permit may be required.
Please contact a local embassy, consulate or representative for more information. Alternatively, there are specialist companies that provide visa and immigration support to the media industry who may be able to assist.
Film Location Permits
Small shoots that don’t require any control of public space, such as handheld b-roll filming, don’t require permits.
Projects that require exclusive use of public space, such as controlling traffic, laying track, large lighting setups or pyrotechnics, require permits. Slovenia has fast turnaround, with most permits able to be processed within 2-3 days.
Filming in National parks is restricted and requires special permits.
Drone filming is permitted.
Customs
For productions looking to bring in film equipment, Slovenia is an ATA carnet country.
When to Film
When to Film
Slovenia has a Mediterranean climate on the coast, and a continental climate in the plateaus and valleys to the east. The northern Alps are warm in the summer and covered in snow in the winter.
July to August is peak season for tourists on the coast. Therefore, September to October is a better time to film for locking down locations. November to February is peak season for tourists in the Alps.
Slovenia is a predominately Christian country, so those holidays are observed.
Public Holidays
Public holidays may affect timing, availability and costs. See here for public holiday dates in Slovenia.
Costs & VAT
Slovenia is one of the more expensive East European service centres. But, in terms of Mediterranean and Alpine scenery, it is still a cost competitive option.
The standard VAT rate in Slovenia at the time of writing is set at 22%.
