Visas & Permits

Visa & Work Permits

Western passport holders can apply online for eVisas for tourism and business travel. An eVisa is issued within three working days, is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, and allows a stay for up to 28 days (for tourists) or 70 days (for business travellers).

Please contact a local embassy, consulate or representative for more information. Alternatively, there are specialist companies that provide visa and immigration support to the media industry who may be able to assist.

Film Location Permits

Filming in Myanmar is heavily restricted.

Customs

For productions looking to bring in film equipment, Myanmar is not an ATA carnet country.

Some very basic camera, grip and lighting equipment is available locally, but most equipment will need to be brought in from abroad.

When to Film

When to Film

Myanmar has three seasons.

The cool, dry season runs from November to February, and is the best time to film. The very hot season runs from March to May. The wet, humid monsoon season runs from June to October. Typhoons occasionally occur between April and October.

Myanmar is predominately Buddhist, so those holidays are observed. A minority also practice Christianity and Islam.

Public Holidays

Public holidays may affect timing, availability and costs. See here for public holiday dates in Myanmar.

Costs & VAT

In Myanmar, local costs are inexpensive. However, since little to no filming infrastructure exists, all key crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad.

Myanmar doesn’t have a VAT system but a commercial tax rate, which at the time of writing is set at 5%.
