Visas & Permits
Visas & Work Permits
Visiting crews travelling on Western passports are allowed visa-free entry for stays of up to 90 days. Most other passport holders can get visas on arrival.
Film crews don’t require work permits, but must have a letter of authorisation from the relevant authorities.
Please contact a local embassy, consulate or representative for more information. Alternatively, there are specialist companies that provide visa and immigration support to the media industry who may be able to assist.
Film Location Permits
Applications need to be made well in advance of shoot days.
Customs
For productions looking to bring in film equipment, Mauritius is an ATA carnet country.
When to Film
When to Film
Mauritius has a tropical climate that remains warm and relatively dry throughout the year. It tends to get more rain inland than on the coast.
November to April is the warmer, wet season. June to September is the cooler, dry season and the best time to film.
The best months for underwater photography, with an abundance of marine life, are November to March, which is also the cyclone season.
Mauritius is a predominately Hindu country, so those holidays are observed. There is also a large Christian community and a smaller Muslim community.
Public Holidays
Public holidays may affect timing, availability and costs. See here for public holiday dates in Mauritius.
Costs & VAT
Locations, local talent and support crew are inexpensive in Mauritius. However, since little to no filming infrastructure exists, all key crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad.
The standard VAT rate in Mauritius at the time of writing is set at 15%.
