Visas & Permits

Visas & Work Permits

The Czech Republic is a member of the Schengen area.

UK passport holders can enter the Czech Republic visa-free for stays of up to 90 days, over a 180 day period, for some business-related activities (such as attending business meetings). However, for longer stays or other types of work, a visa or permit may be required.

Further information on work visas can be found at the GOV.UK website. Alternatively, please contact a local embassy, consulate or representative for more information. There are also specialist companies that provide visa and immigration support to the media industry, and may be able to assist.

Film Location Permits

The Czech Republic has a film friendly and streamlined permitting process.

Small, handheld shoots that don’t require exclusive use of public space aren’t required to have permits.

In Prague, larger productions are required to have permits from the relevant local administrative district and roads authority. Permits typically take ten days to process but this can be expedited at extra cost. Some historic locations have their own special restrictions and fees.

Shoots outside of Prague usually take around three days to permit, depending on the location.

Customs

For productions looking to bring in film equipment, the Czech Republic is an ATA carnet country.

When to Film

When to Film

The Czech Republic has a four season climate with hot summers. May to October are the best months to film for warm weather scenery. November to April has snow in the mountainous areas.

The Czech Republic is a majority Christian country, so those holidays are observed.

Public Holidays

Public holidays may affect timing, availability and costs. See here for public holiday dates in the Czech Republic.

Costs & VAT

Although the Czech Republic is one of the more expensive former Eastern Bloc countries, the high standard of services makes it very good value for money, and a cost competitive alternative to Western Europe.

The standard VAT rate in the Czech Republic, at the time of writing, is set at 21%.
