The BBC has announced its new Creative Diversity Commitment and set out the first steps it will take ‘to transform its programming to better represent the public it serves.’
From April 2021, a mandatory 20% diverse talent target will be applied to all new network commissions. The corporation will also prioritise £100m of its existing commissioning budget over three years (2021/22 - 2023/24) to diverse productions and talent.
This £100m will apply to output across all genres and commits the BBC to create content with at least two of the following three priorities:
- Diverse-led production companies
- Diverse stories and portrayal on-screen
- Diverse production teams and talent
Whilst the mandatory 20% diverse talent target will be introduced in April 2021, the BBC is encouraging producers to take action earlier and will update its commissioning specification this summer.
Further BBC diversity and inclusion plans in other production areas will be set out in the coming weeks.
