Insights, 1-2-1s... and duck herding: CWB 2022

The 2022 edition of Content Without Borders (CWB) took place last week.

Split across two days, over 100 UK indies attended and were given opportunities to hear from and meet with 27 commissioners and buyers from all over the world, with over 500 1-2-1 meetings taking place.

The event began at UK House in Birmingham, during the Creative Tech Day which was part of the accredited Commonwealth Games Business and Tourism Programme. The Keynote In Conversation was with Col Needham, the film buff and tech entrepreneur who Founded IMDb. Sessions across the day explored a diverse range of topics including emerging markets, co-productions, sustainable drama, distribution, literary legacies and the BFI’s Global Screen Fund. Meanwhile, 5-minute pitch sessions gave 25 indies the opportunity to pitch their projects to a group of broadcast commissioners.

During the second day – a smaller gathering held in Stratford-upon-Avon – over 500 1-2-1 meetings were held between indies and commissioners/buyers from the likes of Foxtel (Australia), Welt TV (Germany), CBC (Canada), ERR (Estonia), JSBC (China), ORF (Austria), SABC (South Africa), TG4 (Ireland), VRT (Belgium), Viaplay (Sweden) and ZDF (Germany), to name just a few. It wasn’t all business talk though, as the afternoon provided a different context for networking in the form of axe throwing and duck herding!

Over 500 1-2-1s were held on Day 2 of CWB, but there was still time for some fun!

Huge thanks to all of the broadcasters and buyers, session speakers and moderators, and attendees who joined us across the two days for what was a welcome return to an in-person edition of CWB.
