With over 20 years TV experience, having worked for all the major networks in the UK and the US, Gillane set up Midnight Oil Productions in 2012 and the company has since won commissions to make 21 shows for five different broadcasters in the UK and US.

Prior to setting up Midnight Oil, Gillane ran the BBC’s Additional Programme Unit, which meant she created and oversaw all six series of Doctor Who Confidential, BBC3’s highest rated factual show (voted the best show aired in the channels first 10 years) along with other strands such as BBC2’s Torchwood Declassified, BBC3’s Merlin Secrets and Magic, and top rating children’s series Totally Doctor Who, along with works for BBC Learning such as the Hamlet project for Key Stage 4 English Literature and Theatre Studies.

On graduating film school in New York, she started out working on Reading Rainbow for PBS and then on return to the UK worked for start up indie Catalyst TV on a variety of lifestyle shows including BBC’s Gardeners' World before moving to the BBC’s Documentary Unit where she worked on the documentary series Shopping along with factual entertainment shows with veteran broadcaster Michael Parkinson and fashion designer Paul Smith. Returning to the indie sector she was the lead director on the team that developed the BAFTA award winning show Teletubbies, subsequently returning to the States to revamp the show for its hugely successful run on PBS, staying out there to work on popular factual shows for PBS and ABC.

As lead producer on the VT team on Open House with Gloria Hunniford, Gillane produced cookery, gardening, history and lifestyle strands and then travelled the world filming as far afield as Lapland, Sri Lanka and Nicaragua for Thames TV.  She returned to the BBC in 2004.
