UK television exports survey reveals 13% rise

03/10/2011

Released today by Pact, the annual UK Television Exports Survey (supported by UKTI, ITV and  BBC Worldwide) showed another strong 12 months of growth in international sales of TV and related content.  The report which is independently produced by TRP (covering 2010) reveals a 13% annual increase in revenue from  £1,257m in 2009 to £1,418m.

The report showed too that the USA is still the largest export market for UK producers with sales growing by 13% to £526m (from £465m). Sales to Canada also rose significantly with a 20% increase year-on-year (£61-£73m).

JOHN MCVAY, Pact’s Chief Executive said: “Once again the UK Television Exports Survey shows strong year-on-year growth – but just as importantly – we’re seeing significant growth in new markets and territories too.  These results show that the world is still seeking great formats and programmes of the quality that UK producers are renowned for.”

NICK BAIRD, Chief Executive of UK Trade & Investment, said: “These figures illustrate the world-class strengths and reputation of the UK television industry  and reflects the ongoing support provided by UK Trade & Investment . Both our TV formats, like Dancing with the Stars and X Factor and finished programmes, such as Downton Abbey and Sherlock are increasingly enjoyed by audiences across the globe. The heightened demand for our programmes from emerging, high-growth economies such as Russia is particularly encouraging. "

 Other key findings:

Overseas production of UK formats grew significantly from £37m (2009) to £81m (2010).

  • Sales of digital rights grew very strongly – up to £10m (a 48% increase).
  • There were significant increases in non-English speaking territories too.  Russia for instance saw the greatest increase (54%) although total sales are now only £13m (from £8m).
  • One of the biggest percentage increases was in overseas production of new commissions (292% increase to £11m).
